We woke up early in order to arrive early enough at the RiverbanksRiverbanks Zoo. Maryann is probably the best planner and the most prepared person I know (even more than I). She had us make sandwiches (turkey that she had roasted), loaded drinks, fruit, and water in a cooler and we were off to pick up our darling grand-niece, Kelsey, age 5 1/2. Very precocious, very smart, very funny, and very entertaining. She chatted away in the car on the way there and on the way back evoking laughs from the rest of us on a constant basis. Maryann said it was a small zoo, but we found it to be pretty substantial. It was a warm sunny day, but not rainy, so we were lucky. I'm not a zoo person, myself, but seeing a zoo from the eyes of a child old enough to enjoy it is a beautiful experience. And Kelsey certainly enjoyed it. She fed the giraffe, fed the parrots and had them perch on her arm, walked quite a good distance (while frequently asking to catch a ride on her grandfather Bob's shoulders). She was a joy.

All of us were pretty tired (5,000 steps) and hot (86 degrees) but Maryann and Bob had enough energy left to barbecue burgers, roast garlic cauliflower, and make salad for dinner. We ate outside and gabbed waiting to see what all their lights looked like in the night.

Then we went to bed.
It doesn't sound like it, but it was a full day, and we were all beat.
